Ragdoll Information

Ragdoll cats are known for their gentle disposition, easy-care coat (which is similar to soft rabbit fur) and their captivating blue eyes.

A Ragdoll cat gets along well with children and other pets (including dogs) and lives up to its name, ”Ragdoll,” as he’s often carried around the house in a child's arms.  When held, this affectionate Ragdoll goes limp with pleasure when you cuddle him in your arms.

They are typically large and floppy, laid-back cats that have the ability to go limp while you are holding them. They are lower shedding compared to most breeds of cats.

The Ragdoll will gaze into your eyes with his beautiful baby blues, and is eager to follow wherever you go.  He’s a friendly cat who will greet you happily at the door, play fetch and sleep with you at night.  They are often referred to as “dog-like” as they like to follow you around as a dog would do.  Sturdy and tolerant, he can be a child’s best friend, willing to be dressed up in doll clothes and pushed around in a baby buggy (just make sure your child doesn’t take advantage of his good nature).  The easy-going Ragdoll can even get along well with dogs and, like them, can learn to walk on a leash.  He’s a great choice if you travel frequently and would like to bring a feline companion along.

These sturdy cats have no extreme features and blend easily in to the busy modern household.  He can be a larger cat, with males ranging up to 20 pounds and females slightly smaller, starting at 8 pounds and going up to 15 pounds.  Our “Sierra” weighs 8 1/2 lbs.

The Ragdoll is well suited to any home with people who will love him and give his gorgeous coat a weekly combing (see my suggested comb...located on the “Ragdoll Cat ‘Goodies’” page).  Just a small amount of grooming is adequate for this easy-care coat which is medium to long and very much like soft rabbit fur in texture.  Always keep him indoors to protect him from cars, diseases spread by other cats and attacks from other animals since he won’t have the natural instinct to defend himself.

The breed was created in the 1960s. Today the Ragdoll’s colors are Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red, Cream along with the Tortie or Tortoiseshell and Lynx or Tabby variations. They are a creamy white when they are born and start developing their point colors later.  Their patterns are Color-Point, Mitted and Bi-Color. These cats mature slowly, reaching their full size when they are four years old.
